Set up a pharmacy counter
Available to
Configuration managers and pharmacy managers.Every point of sale has a type, Pharmacy or Cafeteria, and the system behaves accordingly. A pharmacy counter enforces prescriptions, batches, safety checks and returns on the server. A cafeteria till sells food and drink and never medicines.
Pharmacy and cafeteria tills
| Pharmacy counter | Cafeteria till | |
|---|---|---|
| Prescriptions, batches, safety checks, returns | Enforced on the server | Not applied |
| Medicines | Sold | Refused at payment and hidden from the till |
| Products shown | Those whose Sold At is Pharmacy or Both | Those whose Sold At is Cafeteria or Both |
| Insurance payment method | Allowed | Refused |
| Counter screens (filters, Held, pharmacist check, return reasons) | Shown | Not shown |
Set up the till
- Open Settings → Point of Sale, choose the shop at the top and set HIS Point of Sale Type to Pharmacy.
- Under Payment Methods add the ways the counter takes money. For insured sales, create a payment method with Insurance Payer Share ticked. It is allowed on pharmacy tills only.
- Give the pharmacy counter its own operation type that sells from the pharmacy stock location. The standard point of sale operation type is shared by every till.
- Open Settings → HIS Pharmacy and set the stock locations, the held sale limit, the return window and the returns location.
- On each product set Sold At to Pharmacy, Cafeteria or Both. Medicines are Pharmacy; everything else is Cafeteria.
- Open Pharmacy → Counter and start the session.
Pharmacy settings
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Pharmacy stock location | The internal source location for pharmacy dispensing. |
| Patient / issued-medication location | The audited destination for issued medicines and the source for returns. |
| Pharmacy internal transfer operation | The operation type used for the stock-backed dispensing workflow. |
| Independent pharmacist verification | A prescriber who also has a pharmacy role cannot verify their own prescription. |
| Held sale limit (hours) | A sale held for longer is cancelled. Nothing is reserved for a held sale. |
| Return window (days) | A sealed over-the-counter item can be returned for a refund within this many days. |
| Returns location | Returned goods land here, not in saleable stock, until a manager has inspected them. |
| Enforce prescription authorization in POS | Blocks payment of prescription-required products unless the server validates the patient, product, quantity, expiry and authorisation. |
Good to know
- The till's facility is set on the till. If it is empty, the company's first facility is used.
- A till is of one type. A product that belongs to both a pharmacy and a cafeteria, bottled water for example, is set to Both.
- A return is never blocked by the type of the till, because a product may have been reclassified since it was sold.
