Dispense a prescription

Available to

Pharmacy professionals.

Dispensing records what was supplied, from which lot, by whom, and moves the stock. Only a verified, in-date prescription line with quantity remaining can be dispensed.

Medicines sold at the pharmacy counter are dispensed there, at the till, and are recorded as dispensing events too. See Sell and dispense at the pharmacy counter. The steps below are for the stock-backed dispensing workflow, which controlled medicines always use.

Dispense

  1. Open the verified prescription and select Dispense.
  2. The form shows the Prescription Line, Product and Available Quantity. Leave Event Type on Dispense.
  3. Enter the Quantity to supply. It cannot exceed the remaining authorised quantity.
  4. Choose the Lot. A lot that is quarantined or recalled is refused.
  5. For a controlled medication, a second person, not you, must be entered as Witness User.
  6. Confirm. A dispensing event is created and appears on the Dispensing Events tab and under Pharmacy → Dispensing.
  7. On the event, select Create Stock Transfer, validate the transfer in Inventory, then select Post Clinical Event. Select Print Label to print the label for the medicine's size.
The dispense form. Event Type can also be Return to Pharmacy.
The dispense form. Event Type can also be Return to Pharmacy.

Good to know

  • To correct a posted dispense, create a Return to Pharmacy event. A posted event cannot be edited.
  • To cancel a pending dispense, cancel its stock transfer in Inventory first.
  • A ward-administration order is fulfilled through the eMAR, not the dispense form.
