Record a periodontal exam

Available to

Dentists, dental assistants and hygienists.

A periodontal exam records six sites on every tooth: probing depth, recession, bleeding, plaque and suppuration, and for each tooth the mobility and furcation. It needs the periodontal charting module.

Chart a periodontal exam

  1. On the chart, select Perio chart, or open Dental → Periodontal Exams and select New.
  2. Choose the Method and the Entry Order: row by row, or snake order.
  3. Type the depth for each site. Press Enter or the right arrow to move on, the left arrow to go back and the down arrow to enter the recession.
  4. Select the dot on a measured site to flag bleeding, plaque or suppuration.
  5. Enter mobility and furcation per tooth.
  6. A dentist selects Sign exam.
A signed exam. The summary shows the mean depth, attachment loss, sites at 4 mm and 6 mm, and the bleeding and plaque percentages.

What to know

  • A site you have not measured has no value. Blank means not measured, never zero.
  • Attachment loss is worked out from the depth and the recession.
  • Depths are coloured: 1 to 3 mm, 4 to 5 mm and 6 mm or more.
  • The exam shows the change against the previous signed exam.
  • A missing tooth cannot be probed.
  • A signed exam cannot be changed. A new visit takes a new exam.
