Connect instruments and receive results
Available to
Laboratory interface operators and laboratory managers.Analysers can send results to the system as HL7 v2 messages or as ASTM E1394 messages. Each message is matched to the instrument, the order and the test, checked, and applied only when it is safe to do so. Anything doubtful is quarantined for a person to look at.
Add an instrument
- Open Laboratory → Instruments and interfaces → Instruments and select New.
- Enter the Name, a short Code, the Facility, the Vendor and Model, and the Interface Type (HL7 v2 or ASTM).
- Tick Quality Control Required if results from this instrument need a passing quality-control run.
- On Test mapping add a line for each test: the Instrument Test Code, the Test and the Default Unit.
- On Quality control review the runs recorded for this instrument. A run is Pass or Fail.
The analyser, or the middleware in front of it, sends each message to the system's interface with the instrument code in the X-Instrument header and the owner's API key as a bearer token: POST /v1/ingest/hl7v2 for HL7 v2 and POST /v1/ingest/astm for ASTM. Ask your administrator for the address and key.
Every message appears under Laboratory → Instruments and interfaces → Instrument messages with what was done to it.
Message states
| State | Meaning |
|---|---|
Applied | The results were stored on the order. |
Applied in part | Some results were stored; the reason says what was not. |
Quarantined | Held for a person. For example the patient does not match the order, the sample identifier matches no order, or a test code is not mapped for this instrument. Nothing was applied. |
Out of order | An older measurement arrived after a newer one and was ignored. |
Duplicate | The same message arrived twice and was applied once. |
Failed | The message could not be read, for example it is not an HL7 v2 message. |
Good to know
- A result that has already been signed off is never overwritten by an instrument message.
- If the analyser uses its own sample numbers, map them under Sample identifier mapping.
- Quarantined messages stay in the list. Fix the cause (map the code, correct the order) and send the message again.
