Collect and receive a specimen

Available to

Laboratory users and nurses collecting specimens.

A specimen is collected only after the patient is positively identified. The specimen barcode ties the tube to the order.

Collect a specimen

  1. Open Laboratory → Specimen Collection. A specimen waiting to be collected is Expected. (A specimen is added to an order on the order's Specimens tab.)
  2. Select the specimen. Check the Lab Order, Patient and Specimen Type.
  3. Scan the patient's wristband into Scanned Patient Identifier. Enter the Collection Location if your facility records it.
  4. Select Collect After Scan. The specimen becomes Collected, with your name and the time. The order becomes Collected too.
  5. Select Print Label and label the tube at the bedside.
  6. In the laboratory, open the order and select Mark Received, then Start Processing.
