How services are charged
Available to
Billing officers and managers.Services are charged automatically as care happens. Each charge is added to the encounter's draft patient invoice, and where the patient has insurance the payer's share goes to a claim. Nobody types a charge by hand.
What creates a charge
| Service | Charged when (facility setting) |
|---|---|
| Consultation | The patient arrives, when care starts, or at discharge. |
| Laboratory order | When ordered, when the specimen is collected, or when resulted. |
| Imaging order | When ordered, when images are acquired, or when reported. |
| Pharmacy dispense, ward medication, accommodation bed-days, surgery and blood issue | Charged by their own department as the service is delivered. Each has its own Needing Attention list. |
Charge states
| Charge state | Meaning |
|---|---|
Not charged | No charge yet. It will be created when its trigger happens. |
Charged | A charge line was posted to the invoice. |
No billing product | The service has no billing product configured. It was not charged. |
Charge removed | The charge was removed, for example when an order was cancelled before invoicing. |
Credit note required | The charge was already invoiced, so a credit note is needed to reverse it. |
The charged amount comes from the product price on the patient's billing pricelist, or the plan's contract pricelist. If the patient has coverage, the plan splits the amount into the patient's share (after deductible, co-pay and percentage) and the payer's share. See Prepare and submit a claim.
